article was written by Sin D. Piantek and originally published in "Sedona
Connection" magazine, 1996. Since the writing of this piece, the rock paintings
became known as Rock Spirits and Sin D. has painted more than 700 of them,
the majority in homes all over the world.
I think animals, trees, rocks,
sticks, crystals, (you name it) have always spoken to me. My journey
in the realm of rocks began with crystals and precious minerals, collecting
them with a passion for many years. Though I still find a crystal
friend from time to time my moving to Northern Arizona over nine years
ago has opened me up to a whole new world of rocks.
Being gifted to live on a
property that sits on Oak Creek, I found myself drawn to its waters and
to the rocks that inhabit its path. Little by little, over the years,
I have carried rocks home. Enjoying the beauty of their water tumbled
roundness, I would bring them to my gardens. Little did I know at
the time that there was a greater purpose for these rocks in my life.
At one point, finances were
crunched and I felt guided to start painting on these rocks. This
seemed like fun, so I got out the acrylics and started painting, soon discovering
these rocks had their own idea of what they wanted me to paint and how.
Each rock seemed to show me what it was to be. I also realized that my
way of painting would grow and mature as I worked on these rock spirits.
Sculpting and carving with
a paintbrush, carving with the darks and sculpting with the lights, these
rocks started to take on form. I have been an artist all my life and attended
one of the finest art schools but I have never painted the way I was being
guided to on these rocks. I knew that guidance worked with me on
every rock painted, some more then others.
It has become quite an adventure
for me. As I do with all my work, I begin by getting into a quiet state
of mind. Then I pick up a rock and let it tell me what it is or what
it wants to represent its energy. Each rock sends a clear image for me
to see on its surface.
I start with a light pencil
sketch on the surface of the rock and then the fun begins. Like channeling,
I find myself flowing with the image on the rock, working my way around
its shape, so that it takes on form.
Feeling totally connected
to the rock and attended by my spirit guides, it is truly a joint effort.
Although my guides keep stressing to me that my importance in each painting
is equal to theirs I still am amazed by the art that I create. I am still
surprised and fascinated with every rock and sharing them with others is
my greatest joy.
Each painting is truly an
ambassador from the rock spirit kingdom.
